Being interested in the environment and wanting to help reduce impacts to it was one of the motivating reasons for me becoming a tree consultant. So, as part of my responsibility as an environmental company I try to take as many steps as possible to reduce my carbon footprint.
Admittedly, this is difficult in a modern age where so many aspects of my work is reliant on technology that, in some cases, have short life cycles and the production methods have numerous environmental implications. However, being effect in my job and having technology that helps me provide the best service I can is important although I must try and take steps where I can to reduce my companies impact on the environment.
Where possible I use solar powered or rechargeable devices to reduce the use of disposable batteries and issue reports electronically rather than using paper. My office benefits from passive heating and I always try to save as many trees as possible on projects I involved with but sometimes this is not possible and so I am proactive in recommending replanting, particularly with the correct species for the correct space so that conflicts are avoided later in its lifetime.
As I travel nationwide the use of a car is, unfortunately, unavoidable and until I am rich enough to purchase an electric vehicle that can do over 100 miles on charge I am restricted to my modest sized family car. Obviously, this has environmental impacts but where possible I try to use public transport or, if a job is local enough, I will use my electric bike to get to site. This is one of the many investments I have made to reduce the carbon footprint of Macintyre Trees.
As an individual I donate monthly to the Woodland Trust and Friends of the Earth and have also established a community initiative which involves educating children about the benefits of trees and the environment by collecting local seeds and growing them for the benefit of future generations and to help limit the impacts of my work.
These are small steps but, in my view, are well worth the effort.
